Outlines - I’m trying to work on the basics at the moment, namely value, line and color. Line seems the most fundamental place to start. I think that lines can be wonderful in their own right, as well as descriptive and accurate in whatever they are portraying. In addition it’s a great way to focus on seeing things as a whole. For now this project is mostly drawings of plants, partly because their diversity fascinates me, but also because they’re easy to find and they don’t move much. ;) I’ll likely move to more difficult subjects later.

Bad Art - Inspired by Keri Smith’s Wreck This Journal project and her list of 100 ideas. The point isn’t to make anything ‘bad’ like the name suggests, only to be creative without self-imposed limitations on what things should look like or how they should be made. In addition it’s a great opportunity to actually use the art supplies I have and a chance to try out new techniques.

Hello there, welcome to my blog.

I’m Heather Chen, also currently a senior at St Mary’s College of Maryland and I created this blog so I would have a place to put my art. I’m majoring in biology (yes, I’m not an art major though I wish I were sometimes!) and I have a strong interest in ecology and environmental science. My main interest is in natural patterns and processes and the evolution of living things and I hope to communicate this to others through art.
